Formatting a document with both text and graphics can sometimes be a challenge. To make this task a little easier, you can lock an image to a fixed position in Google Docs.

You can choose a location for the image, adjust it relative to the top left corner of the page, or choose a quick layout. So when you add, delete, or move text, the image stays exactly where you want it.

Set a fixed position for an image in Google Docs

With your image in the document, you first decide how you want it to align with the text around it. You can choose to wrap the text around the image, or to break the text, placing it above and below.

Select the image to display the toolbar below it. Then click the Wrap Text or Pause Text icon, depending on your preference. For this how-to we use Break Text.

Click Wrap Text or Pause Text

Then go to the Position Options drop-down list in the toolbar. This will probably show as Move with text. Click the drop-down list and choose "Correct position on page."

Select Fix position on page

Optionally, you can adjust the image margin in the toolbar. This determines how much space there is between the image and the surrounding text.

Now you can give your fixed image position a test. If you edit the text around it, add another line, or move the text up, you'll find that the image stays in place.

Position the image relative to the top left

One adjustment you can make to the fixed position of your image is the distance from the top left corner of the page.

Select the image to display the toolbar, click the three dots on the far right and choose 'All Image Options'.

Click on the three dots and choose All Image Options

When the sidebar on the right opens, click to expand the Position section. Under Relative to the top left corner of the page, adjust the X and/or Y values using the arrows or entering the dimensions in inches. Values for X move the image left to right and those for Y move it up or down.

Set the X and Y relative to the top left corner

Position the image with a quick layout

Another way to determine where the image will lock is with one of the quick layouts. Use the arrows in the Image Options sidebar to switch between the nine layout options.

Quick Layouts in Google Docs

Allows you to position the image at the top, center, or bottom of the page, aligned left, center, or right. Click on one of the quick layouts to apply it to your image.

Quick layout applied to image

When you use both text and graphics and start moving things around, it can be difficult to keep the document layout clean. But locking your image in a fixed position allows you to work with your words while keeping your images in place.
